Retrospect, Inc. Announces New Releases for Windows and Mac

Block Level Incremental Backup Improves Storage Efficiency Saving Resources

PLEASANTON, Calif.—March 4, 2014—Retrospect®, Inc. today announced new versions of Retrospect Backup & Recovery Software for Microsoft® Windows® and Apple® Mac® OS X®. Retrospect 9 for Windows and Retrospect 11 for Mac both include block level incremental backup technology for smaller, faster backups, a new high-level dashboard, and detailed email reporting. Retrospect 9 for Windows also includes improved disaster recovery and dissimilar hardware restore.

Block level incremental backup provides customers with a significant boost in performance by adding the ability to back up only the parts of a file that have changed —providing a powerful complementary option to its traditional file level backup. Many data-intensive applications like Microsoft Outlook® and Microsoft Exchange® store their data in a single large file that constantly changes by small increments. With block level incremental backup, Retrospect locates the changes in a file and backs up only those blocks, speeding up the backup and using far less storage. This freed-up time and storage can be used to back up additional systems, provide breathing room for future growth, or back up critical data more frequently.

Retrospect’s new dashboard is a valuable productivity tool that gives customers a high-level overview of their current backup environment, with a weekly summary and a visualization of recent backups. Customers can quickly see which computers are not protected, identify which computers back up the most data, and evaluate their storage usage, saving time and ensuring complete data protection.

Improved email reporting provides a wealth of data about each backup. The operations log is now included in the reports to give customers complete insight into each backup's progress. With these detailed logs customers can supervise their backups from any device and filter emails based on errors or warnings to hone in on issues as soon as they happen.

“We are very excited about these new features, offering our customers a complete data protection eco-system.” said David Lee, Retrospect's Director of Worldwide Product Management. “Smaller organizations are continually challenged by the need for a comprehensive cross-platform data protection solution that offers full on-site and off-site data protection, archiving, and duplication. There are so many incomplete options in the market today that it can be very confusing. For the last 30 years, we have continued to develop Retrospect for small and medium sized businesses, refining and enhancing our tried-and-true technology, so our customers can be confident that their data is completely protected now and for the future.”

Other Improvements

Retrospect 9 for Windows includes an enhanced disaster recovery workflow for full compatibility with Windows XP® through Windows 8.1® and Windows Server 2012 R2® and complete support for 64-bit machines and drivers. In addition, Retrospect’s Dissimilar Hardware Restore add-on for Windows also includes full support for Windows 8.1® and Windows 2012 R2® and 64-bit operating systems and drivers.

Retrospect, Inc. Announces New Release for Protecting VMware Virtual Environments

Add-on Agent protects VMware® ESX™ 4.1 and ESXi™ 5 virtual environments data

PLEASANTON, Calif.—March 19, 2013—Retrospect®, Inc. today announced a new VMware® add-on product for the company’s Retrospect for Microsoft® Windows® backup and recovery software.

The Retrospect 8 VMware Host Server Add-on allows users to add VMware® ESX and Virtual Center servers to Retrospect’s volume database, protecting data on any supported Windows guest whose volumes are running NTFS or FAT/FAT32 file systems.

This new add-on simplifies and enhances the protection of ESX™ 4.1 and ESXi™ 5 virtual environments through complete integration into the Retrospect dashboard, use of selectors to exclude unnecessary files from backup, deduplication across multiple VM guests to reduce backup time and space requirements, complete visibility into backed up files, and full Windows 8 compatibility. Retrospect’s vast and flexible support of multiple media types, including tape drives, libraries, WebDAV cloud storage, disk, NAS and flash, makes backing up virtual environments more cost effective.

“Virtualization in small business is growing exponentially, so having an add-on that works within Retrospect and utilizes its core technologies to protect our customers’ virtual data is critical,” said Retrospect, Inc. cofounder Matt Johnson. “We find that small businesses are often resource-challenged so they really appreciate being able to utilize all of the features of the Retrospect software that they already own to protect their virtual environments. Plus, many of them still back up to tape, so the ability to back up virtual environments to tape is a huge benefit.”

Pricing and Availability

The Retrospect 8 VMware Host Server Add-on Agent is available immediately from Retrospect resellers or www.retrospect.com as an electronic download. Retrospect is available in 6 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese.

Retrospect, Inc. Announces New Releases for Windows and Mac OS

Instant Scan Technology Improves Backup and Restore Times

PLEASANTON, Calif.—November 6, 2012—Retrospect®, Inc. today announced new versions of the company’s Retrospect backup and recovery software for Microsoft® Windows® and Apple® Mac OS® X. These releases feature several improvements, including “Instant Scan” technology that speeds backup and restore operations for Windows and Mac computers, a Dissimilar Hardware Restore add-on for Windows computers, and an all-new Retrospect Client agent for backing up Windows systems from both Windows and Mac OS.

Instant Scan provides Retrospect 8 for Windows and Retrospect 10 for Mac with a significant performance boost by predetermining which files may need to be copied during any particular activity. By handling this process as a background task rather than as a part of the backup process, Retrospect is able to shave valuable minutes or hours off the time needed to complete backup and restore operations. This time savings can be used to back up additional systems, provide breathing room for future growth, or back up critical data more frequently.

Retrospect 8’s Dissimilar Hardware Restore option for Windows provides the capability to restore everything—user data and settings, applications, and even the operating system—from a backed up computer to one with completely different hardware.

“Since returning Retrospect to private ownership in November 2011, we’ve refocused on our traditional core markets: small and midsize businesses,” said company cofounder Eric Ullman. “One challenge faced by smaller organizations that lack dedicated IT staff is restoring applications and user data to a brand new computer. The new hardware is often different enough from the old that a simple restore becomes a complex migration project. Retrospect 8’s Dissimilar Hardware Restore add-on completely eliminates that pain point by automating the restore process and adjusting for the new hardware.”

The all-new Retrospect Client agent for Windows—included with both the Mac and Windows releases—provides on-demand backup and restore functionality right in the client software. This allows end users to manage their own high-priority restores without requiring intervention from the backup administrator. This capability was introduced for Mac clients late last year, and now it’s available for both platforms, along with improved (AES-256) network link encryption, notification area integration, and administrator-level control to activate these features on a client-by-client basis.

Other Improvements

Retrospect 8 for Windows gains support for cloud-based storage using WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), providing an easy, automated option for immediate offsite backups. Cloud storage providers like Egnyte (www.egnyte.com) and Internet hosting providers like Dreamhost (www.dreamhost.com) provide affordable WebDAV-accessible storage that Retrospect can employ for offsite backups. This feature was first made available in Retrospect 9 for the Mac.

Pricing and Availability

Retrospect 8 for Windows and Retrospect 10 for Mac are both available immediately from Retrospect resellers or www.retrospect.com as an electronic download. Boxed product will be available from resellers at the end of November. Retrospect is available in 6 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese.

Pricing for Retrospect ranges from $119 for Retrospect Professional (Windows) and Desktop (Mac), which protect a single non-server computer and up to five additional networked PCs, up to $1,999 for Retrospect Multi Server (Windows and Mac), which protects as many Mac, Windows, and Linux servers and PCs as bandwidth and storage capacity will allow. Upgrades range from $49 to $1,109. (All prices listed above are suggested retail pricing in U.S. dollars.) For a complete listing of new and upgrade product pricing, please visit retrospect.com.

Free upgrade period: Individuals and organizations that purchased a Retrospect license on or after October 1, 2012 will receive email notification that they qualify for a free upgrade to the latest Retrospect release.

Retrospect, Inc. Assumes Development of Retrospect Backup and Recovery Software Products, Releases Retrospect 9 for Mac

New Release Improves Stability and Performance, Adds Support for Cloud Storage

PLEASANTON, Calif.—November 2, 2011—Retrospect, Inc., a privately‐held company recently founded by longtime Retrospect team members, announced today the immediate availability of its first independent product offering, Retrospect 9 for the Mac. With features like data deduplication, network backup of Mac, Windows, and Linux computers, and new support for cloud‐based storage, Retrospect 9 provides critical functionality for professionals and small businesses that need more than basic data protection.

“We’re ecstatic to take on the development and support of Retrospect, and we’re the right team to do it,” said Eric Ullman, co‐founder in charge of products for Retrospect, Inc. “Our teammates average 10 years of experience each with Retrospect products, either as developers or in customer‐facing roles, and the core members have been with the Retrospect product since the early nineties. We are united in our mission to provide powerful, flexible—and above all—reliable backup and recovery software to our customers and to stand behind it with the best customer support in the industry.”

One of the new features in Retrospect 9 for Mac is support for cloud‐based storage, which provides immediate offsite backups. Retrospect 9 can target any Internet‐ connected storage that has been configured to provide WebDAV (Web‐based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) access. Cloud storage providers like Egnyte (www.egnyte.com) and Internet hosting providers like Dreamhost (www.dreamhost.com) provide affordable WebDAV‐accessible storage that Retrospect can employ for offsite backups. By choosing WebDAV, which is standards‐based, cross‐platform, and easy to configure, Retrospect is courting consultants and managed service providers who want to provide offsite storage services for their clients.

“Retrospect is a channel product, and we intend to provide increased functionality for our consultant and MSP partners around which they can build additional services,” said Matt Johnson, Retrospect, Inc. co‐founder in charge of sales, marketing, and support. “With Retrospect 9 for Mac, our partners can now generate additional business and revenue by easily targeting backups to private cloud storage that they co‐locate or manage for their customers.”

Other Improvements

Retrospect 9 for Mac also includes an all‐new network backup client for Intel‐based Macs. This new, 64‐bit client uses optional AES‐256 encryption when sending backup data to the Retrospect server, and it allows users to initiate on‐demand backups and restores from the desktop or the Retrospect Client preferences pane. End‐users can also be notified of starting and completed backup operations with integrated Growl notifications.

Rounding out this release is a host of improvements to performance, task workflows, user interface elements, and reliability. Specifically, Retrospect can now run twice as many simultaneous operations as the previous version; it uses less memory and fewer processor cycles at idle; tape library management has been improved; Retrospect’s configuration file is more resistant to corruption; and client backups and restores are faster. Retrospect 9 also offers a new view of past backups that show only those files that were copied during the backup, making it easy to see Retrospect’s data deduplication technology at work conserving backup storage space.

Pricing and Availability

Retrospect 9 is available immediately from Retrospect resellers or www.retrospect.com as an electronic download. Boxed product will be available from resellers at the end of November.
