title: Error -560 invalid private/public key created_at: 2012.06.27 updated_at: 2012.06.27 category: Troubleshooting platforms: Windows, Mac ---

This error often happens if you attempt to access a client that has a problem with the public key file or with the password assigned during install.

Problem with one client

If this is occurring on some of the clients and working for others, it may be a corruption in the specific clients "pubkey.dat" files.

To fix the problem do the following:

Macintosh Clients

  1. Go to the client computer

  2. Run the uninstall script included with the Retrospect Client installer

  3. Go to Library/preferences and delete the retroclient.state file

  4. Copy the public key (pubkey.dat) from the server found in "/Library/Application Support/Retrospect/pubkey.dat" and include it in the "pubkey" in the client installer.

  5. Reinstall the Retrospect Client. Retrospect should prompt you to enter a new password during the install process.

  6. Go to the backup server and re-add the Retrospect Client.

Windows Clients

  1. Go to the client computer

  2. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Retrospect Client

  3. Copy the public key (pubkey.dat) from the server found in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect" and paste it on the client in the "C:\Program Files\Retrospect\Retrospect Client" folder.

  4. Re-install the Retrospect Client

  5. Go to the backup server and re-add the Retrospect Client.

Problem with all clients

If this appears to be occurring on all of your clients, recreate the public/private key and redistribute the updated client. Be sure to uninstall the client prior to reinstalling the client with the new public key.
