Licensing Steps

Licensing Steps

Below is a guide to licensing Retrospect Virtual. There are a number of components to Retrospect Virtual that work together to deliver complete virtual data protection. Let's step through each of them.

1. Retrospect Virtual Console (1 Per Network)

Retrospect Virtual Console is your management and monitoring dashboard. It's typically licensed by a managed service provider (MSP) but can also be licensed directly by a customer for managing their unique environment.

Retrospect Virtual Console allows you to manage your entire virtual data infrastructure anytime from anywhere. All of your customers roll up under the same dashboard and management tools, so you only need to check on place for a complete view of your virtual data protection. Retrospect Virtual Console manages the following items:

  • Users – You have access to all of your users and their individual settings. You can enable or disable specific features for a specific user or change a group policy for a set of user.
  • Systems – Keep an eye on all of the systems protected with Retrospect Virtual. You can see system status, check on-going activities, and dive into past logs to resolve errors.
  • Group policies – With a group policy, you can manage the settings for an entire set of customers. When you add a new destination, you can roll it out group by group.
  • Backup destinations – Retrospect Virtual supports a wide array of backup destinations, but not every customer needs access to every destination. You can restrict access to a subset, depending on your customer's unique environment.
  • Trial creation – Customers can try before they buy with the trial creation wizard. Deploy a trial version of Retrospect Virtual Host Server on their system to demonstrate its features without them having to pay upfront.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Protection (Agentless) – Customers can use Retrospect Virtual Console with Run-on-Server Backup Sets to protect their Microsoft Office 365 tenants without installing Retrospect Virtual Host Server.

2. License Host Servers - (per ESX, vCenter or HyperV)

Retrospect Virtual Host Server is the backup agent that you install on your host(s). It supports ESX (both free and paid versions), vCenter, and Hyper-V. You then connect the Host to your Retrospect Virtual Console for remote management and monitoring.

For granular backup of virtualized applications, you need to install a second Retrospect Virtual Host Server on the individual guest machines to protect your applications and databases.

3. License Virtual Machines (Per VM or Per Socket)

Retrospect Virtual protects the virtual environment based on either sockets or guest virtual machines. This flexible approach to pricing allows you to tailor Retrospect Virtual to your customer's individual environment.

For larger environments, per-socket licensing is the best choice via Retrospect Virtual Socket Add-on.

For smaller environments, per-VM licensing is more affordable via Retrospect Virtual Guest Add-on.

NOTE: For Microsoft Office 365 protection, no virtual machine licenses are needed, but customers need to purchase one Retrospect Virtual Host Server license to protect their Microsoft Office 365 user base.

4. Add-on Agent Options

Exchange Database Backup - (Add 1 Host Server license per Exchange Server)

With the hot backup feature in our Exchange Database backup solution, you can back up the Exchange database while continuing to access the data 24x7 without any service interruption or performance impact. This lets users carry on working while the backup is performed.

Exchange Mailbox Backup License - (per Mailbox)

The essential backup module for using in conjunction with Host Server to backup / restore individual Mails, Calendars and Contacts of particular Mailboxes in Microsoft Exchange Server without the need to backup / restore the whole Exchange Information Store. With just a few clicks, you can quickly back up individual emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, and public folders.

Our Exchange DAG solution supports backup and restore of Exchange DAG at both database and mailbox levels, even if the nodes in the DAG are geographically distributed.

SQL Server Database Backup (Add 1 Host Server license per SQL Server)

With our hot backup feature, administrators can back up Microsoft SQL Server databases without taking the database servers offline. The backup is performed even if the SQL server services are running. The program does not affect the server or client performance because it requires minimal resources. Our solution allows you to restore the Microsoft SQL Server database from any point in time that it was backed up. If future changes cause a problem, you can restore the database to the way it was before the changes were made.

MySQL, Lotus Notes / Domino, and Oracle - (Add 1 Host Server license per Database)

With our hot backup feature, administrators can back up databases without taking the database servers offline. The backup is performed even if the server services are running. The program does not affect the server or client performance because it requires minimal resources. Our solution allows you to restore the Server database from any point in time that it was backed up. If future changes cause a problem, you can restore the database to the way it was before the changes were made.

Granular “File-Level” Restore (per backup set)

For granular protection of virtualized applications and databases, you need to install an additional Retrospect Virtual Host Server on the VM where the application is installed. This essential module for quickly opening and restoring individual folders and files for VMware ESXi/vCenter guest VM, Hyper-V guest VM, compressed file or disk image file (e.g. ZIP, RAR, ISO). A Granular Restore module license allows unlimited granular restores for one VM within a Host Server user account.

Office 365 Backup Solution for SharePoint, Exchange, OneDrive - (per User)

The essential backup module for using in conjunction with Host Server to backup / restore individual Mails, Calendars and Contacts of particular Mailboxes in Office 365 Exchange Online: Automatic backup, on-demand restore, O365-to-local/cloud backup, Keep unlimited versions forever, Unbreakable 256-bit encryption, 30% faster than Veeam.

To deploy Retrospect Virtual's Office 365 backup, simply create a Host Server client user in your Management Server centralized management console with Office 365 backup module enabled. Then, either create an Office 365 backup set through Management Server (agentless backup), or in Host Server client backup agent software (agent-based backup).

Replication Module - (per Host Server)

With the Replication module enabled, backed up data and system settings can be replicated to another Virtual Console machine, FTP / SFTP server, and cloud storage.

The Replication Module for the Host Server is for immediate replication of backed up data and backup server settings to cloud storage or to another Management Server for additional protection on the backed-up data. The price of Replication Module is per Host Server backed up device to replicate.

Near real time replication: After data are backed up from Host Server to Management Server backup server, replication will be triggered almost instantly.

Redirection Module – (Per Host Server)

The essential component for building a high scalability backup infrastructure by using multiple Retrospect Virtual Consoles. It is used for redirecting traffic from the Host Server to its’ dedicated Virtual Console within a farm of servers. Each unit is for 1 backed up device to be redirected. For example, if you want to redirect 1 Host Server with 10 backed devices to Virtual Console #1, then you need to purchase 10 units of Virtual Console Redirector Module.

The Redirection Module for the Virtual Console is a high scalability module for building a farm of multiple Virtual Console backup servers to serve a large number of backup users.
