In order to setup a proper retention policy for an incremental backup, two steps need to be ensured: first, that the incremental backups be turned on at both the user level and backup set level – by default, incremental backups are turned on only at the backup set level, you must manually turn them on at the user level.

Secondly, you need to ensure the scheduled backups contain an intermittent full backup. Retrospect Virtual cannot groom out backups that don’t contain any full backups other than the original backup, as every incremental backup relies on the previous backup to do a complete restore – you will need to schedule full backups within your incremental backup schedule.

To ensure you have incremental backups turned on at the user level, do the following:

  1. Log into the Virtual Management Console (the web interface that defaults to 127.0.0.1), then click on Users, Groups and Policies.

  2. Under Backup User at the top, select your user.

  3. Under User Profile on the left and Backup Client Settings at the top, check In-File Delta, then select the green save icon at the bottom right.

To set up your schedule to have intermittent full backups, do the following:

  1. Log into the Virtual Host Server (the standalone program).

  2. Select Backup Sets: Select the backup set in question.

  3. Select Show Advanced Settings on the left, then In-File Delta.

  4. Select Show Advanced Settings in In-File Delta and scroll down to the weekly variations.

  5. It’s generally recommended to select at least a single day a week to run as a full backup, however you can select multiple days or scroll down to yearly variations and choose once a month to run a full backup instead – save the changes once you are done.

To confirm what your retention policy is, you can select Retention Policy below In- File Delta. You can also confirm the retention policy is running automatically by selecting Backup Schedule – double clicking on your schedule, then making sure the box next to ‘Run Retention Policy after backup’ is checked.
