title: Error -560 invalid private/public key created_at: 2012.06.27 updated_at: 2012.06.27 category: Troubleshooting platforms: Windows, Mac ---
This error often happens if you attempt to access a client that has a problem with the public key file or with the password assigned during install.
If this is occurring on some of the clients and working for others, it may be a corruption in the specific clients "pubkey.dat" files.
To fix the problem do the following:
Go to the client computer
Run the uninstall script included with the Retrospect Client installer
Go to Library/preferences and delete the retroclient.state file
Copy the public key (pubkey.dat) from the server found in "/Library/Application Support/Retrospect/pubkey.dat" and include it in the "pubkey" in the client installer.
Reinstall the Retrospect Client. Retrospect should prompt you to enter a new password during the install process.
Go to the backup server and re-add the Retrospect Client.
Go to the client computer
Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Retrospect Client
Copy the public key (pubkey.dat) from the server found in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect" and paste it on the client in the "C:\Program Files\Retrospect\Retrospect Client" folder.
Re-install the Retrospect Client
Go to the backup server and re-add the Retrospect Client.
If this appears to be occurring on all of your clients, recreate the public/private key and redistribute the updated client. Be sure to uninstall the client prior to reinstalling the client with the new public key.
