Retrospect Virtual - Error: Invalid Byte # of # UTF-8 Sequence

title: "Retrospect Virtual - Error: Invalid Byte # of # UTF-8 Sequence" created_at: 2019.06.25 updated_at: 2019.06.25 category: Virtualization --- If you are attempting to launch the Retrospect Virtual Host Server (VHS) and are met with the error of Invalid Byte 1 of 1 (1 of 2, 2 of 3, etc) UTF-8 Sequence, see the following:

  1. On the machine that the VHS is installed on, go to services.msc and stop the "Retrospect Virtual Host Server" service.

  2. Go to C:\Users\your_username\.obm\config and rename the settings.sys file to BACKUP_settings.sys.

    NOTE: Before you do this, make sure to have the encryption keys for your backup sets handy because the Retrospect Virtual Host Server will ask for them.

  3. Start the "Retrospect Virtual Host Server" service.

  4. Try logging into the Retrospect Virtual Host Server again.
