Retrospect Virtual: How to Restore the Default Password


If you are locked out of Retrospect Virtual Management Console, you will see a message like this:

Virtual no user

Please follow these steps:

  1. Open "cbs.json" in C:\Program Files\RetrospectVMC\conf with a text editor such as Notepad++.

  2. Search for the exact phrase "Type":"ADMIN" (or search for ADMIN with matching case).

  3. Edit the "Pwd" entry by replacing


    with the following:

  4. Restart the Retrospect Virtual Management Console service afterward.

  5. Login to the Retrospect Management Console with username "system" and password "system".
