title: "Retrospect Virtual: How to Stop a Stuck Backup" created_at: 2019.02.15 updated_at: 2020.04.28 category: Virtualization --- If you have a backup that is stuck in your Retrospect Virtual Host Server and you are unable to stop or remove it from the console, please try the following:

Option 1

  1. On your Windows server, go to C:\Users\(your username)\.obm\ipc\BackupSet\(backupsetID).

Note: If you don’t know the backupset ID, you can also sort this folder by date modified and it should be one of the most recent folders.

  2. In this folder, delete the file called "running".

  3. Open up the Windows services console (services.msc) and restart the service “Retrospect Virtual Host Server Services”.

The stuck backup should be clear now.

Option 2

Alternatively, if this does not stop the stuck back, try the following:

  1. On your Windows server, go to C:\Users\(your username)\.obm\ipc\BackupSet\(backupsetID).

Note: If you don’t know the backupset ID, you can also sort this folder by date modified and it should be one of the most recent folders.

  2. In this folder, create a file called 'stop' without an extension.

  3. Wait for four minutes.

  4. After waiting, the stop file and running file should have both been deleted. Check the status of the backup to verify it stopped.

Option 3

You can disable the VHS user, which should stop any stuck backups or restores:

  1. Log into the Virtual Management Console (the web interface) and go to Users, Groups and Policies, select the VHS user with the stuck backup/restore.

  2. Select User Profile on the left. Under the General tab on the top, scroll down to Status. Change to Suspended and save the page from the green save icon at the bottom right

  3. Wait 5 minutes.

  4. Set that status back to Enable and save the page.

Option 4

The last option to stop a stuck backup is as follows:

  1. Launch services.msc and stop the "Retrospect Virtual Host Server Services".

  2. Open the Windows Task Manager and kill all bschJW.exe processes.

  3. Right Click on the Virtual Host Server system tray icon and select stop the backup.

  4. Open the Windows Task Manager and kill all bJW.exe processes.

  5. Empty the folder C:\Program Files\RetrospectVHS\ipc\Scheduler.

  6. Empty the folder C:\Users\(your username)\.obm\ipc\ BackupSet\(backupsetID).

  7. Start the Retrospect Virtual Host Server service back up

Manual Backup

In rare instances, Retrospect Virtual can report false positives and display a backup in progress that is not actually running. You can usually clear this up by simply running a manual backup.
